Mottled Snake-Eyed Skink (Cryptoblepharus poecilopleurus)
Description: Eye covered by immovable, transparent disc, bordered by small, granular scales and usually three enlarged upper ciliary scales. Frontoparietal and interparietal shields normally fused, forming a large, roughly diamond shaped shield. Frontal short, about as long as wide. Habitat: Hawaii: prefers rock walls or lava overlooking or adjacent to beach; also found at 975 m in Kau desert on the island of Hawaii; basks on rocks, seeks cover among rocks, active in intertidal zone; prefers dry situations. Communal nest has been found in damp earth.
Range: Introduced into the Hawaiin Island chain. This species is widespread in the Pacific, ranging through the Austral Islands, Cook Islands, Line Islands, Easter Island, Gilbert Islands, Hawaiian Islands, Marianas Islands, Marquesas, Marshall Islands, Palau, Phoenix Islands, Pitcairn, Samoa, Society Islands, Tahiti, Tonga, Tuamotu, Solomon Islands (Rennel Island only and possibly introduced, Wake Island. There are occasional records from the coast of mainland South America (Peru). It appears to be absent from Fiji. It is found up to 75 m asl.

Diet: Eats beach flies, cockroaches, beetles, sand fleas, butterflies, moths, caterpillars, spiders, and other small arthropods. May leave rocks to forage on sandy beach.
Reproduction: Oviparous. Clutch size usually is 2, sometimes 1. Multiple females may lay eggs in same site. Eggs hatch in 4 to 7 weeks.
Status: Listed as Least Concern in view of its wide distribution, there are no major threats and because the population is unlikely to be declining.
Subspecies: Two, unsure which subspecies in found in the U.S.
