Broad-Striped Dwarf Siren (Pseudobranchus striatus striatus)
Description: Adult P. striatus have a brownish to black dorsal ground color with parallel yellow or tan stripes running along the back and sides from head to tail tip. There is geographic color variation and two or three subspecies are recognized. Pseudobranchus s. striatus, the broad-striped dwarf siren, has a dark brown to blackish middorsal stripe with a narrow yellow line running down the middle and broader yellow lateral stripes. The venter has a lighter ground color than the back and is heavily mottled with yelow. This subspecies is also considered somewhat stocky in build.
Habitat: Common in cypress ponds, hiding among plants or burrowing in the mud or muck of the bottom.
Range: Range is uncertain. It has been tentatively suggested restricting this taxon to only those Atlantic coastal lowland populations north of the Altamaha River in Georgia. However, populations of this species extend southward to Vousia County, Florida, but whether these represent this subspecies or a different phylogeographic unit was uncertain due to insufficient sampling.
Found in these States:

Diet: Diet consists of aquatic invertebrates, including earthworms, amphipods, chironomids, and ostracods.
Reproduction: Courtship and mating have not been observed. Fertilization is presumed to be external. Eggs are deposited singly, and the oviposition period lasts from early November through March
Status: Listed as Imperiled or Vulerable in all regions it is found.
Taxonomy: Fouquette and Dubois (2014) and Crother (2017) recognized subspecies, but according to Frost (2020), the lack of recent molecular studies (or even detailed morphological studies) leaves the subspecies problematic whether historical entities (i.e., species) or merely arbitrarily delimited parts of geographic variation.
