Jollyville Plateau Salamander (Eurycea tonkawae)STATUS

Description: The Jollyville Plateau Salamander (Eurycea tonkawae) is a small, brownish, aquatic salamander. It is a member of the family, Plethodontidae, also known as the lung-less salamanders (oxygen exchange occurs entirely through their skin and/or gills in aquatic species).

Habitat: aquatic habitats (springs, spring-runs, and wet caves)

Range: The Jollyville Plateau salamander occurs in the Jollyville Plateau and Brushy Creek areas of the Edwards Plateau in Travis and Williamson Counties, Texas.

Found in these States: TX

Diet: Invertebrates

Reproduction: Little is known about the Jollyville Plateau Salamander since it was just discovered in 2000.

Status: Research shows that as urban development booms, this salamander's population declines — and with good reason, since development exposes the sensitive amphibian, its eggs and its invertebrate prey to major water pollution, which is already causing salamander deformities and death. Now the Jollyville Plateau salamander faces the scariest single threat of all: a massive water-treatment plant planned in, and adjacent to, its home.
